About the Bible Lessons

The teachings of Christian Science are deeply rooted in the Bible.  The Weekly Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly are made up of study references from the Bible (King James Version) and from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

The Bible Lessons comprise the Sunday church "sermons."  They also provide an outline for daily study.  The spiritual truths in these Lessons have brought support, regeneration, and healing to readers for over one hundred years.

"Your dual and impersonal pastor, the Bible, and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' is with you; and the Life these give, the Truth they illustrate, the Love they demonstrate, is the great Shepherd that feedeth my flock, and leadeth them 'beside the still waters.'"   -  Mary Baker Eddy

"I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding."   - Jeremiah 3:15

How to study the Bible Lessons

It's easy and convenient to study the Bible Lessons.  All you need are the Christian Science Quarterly, King James Version of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.   Each Bible Lesson is outlined in the Quarterly and is made up of selections from these two books.

Start by reading the Golden Text and Responsive Reading in the Quarterly (these are Bible passages that set the tone for the rest of the Lesson-Sermon).  Then go on to read all the Bible selections in Section 1, followed by the selections from Science and Health.  Next, read the following five sections in the same manner.  Each selection develops an aspect of the subject for that week.

When you read from the Bible:  Each Bible selection in the Quarterly includes numbers.  The number before the colon refers to the chapter of the Bible book indicated.  Numbers after the colon refer to the specific verses in that chapter that are cited in the Lesson.  You will sometimes find italicized words in the Quarterly selections.  In this case, start reading with that word (or words) in the Bible text.  (There is occasionally some variation in punctuation in King James Bibles.)

When you read from Science and Health:  The Science and Health selections given in the Quarterly are arranged with page numbers preceding the colon and line numbers following. (The line numbers in Science and Health are numbered in the margins.)  If more than one sentence starts on a given line, begin reading with the first sentence, unless otherwise indicated.  Also, when a word or phrase in italics follows a line reference in the Quarterly, start reading with the first occurrence of that word or phrase in the Science and Health text.  Read to the end of each paragraph, even if it continues on to the next page, unless otherwise indicated.
